Top tips to look out for when choosing a locksmith
Common Scams
- Overcharging
- Fake local locksmiths
- Unnecessary lock replacement
- Bait and switch
This happens because there is no price structure out there to refer to. Locksmiths can charge whatever they like, and an evil one will take advantage of the situation. You would expect to pay extra for a call-out over a weekend and definitely for late-night situations. But always get a price before you employ a Barnsley locksmith for a service.
Fake local locksmiths
This is the common one, and it has existed all the time I have been a locksmith. National companies returning to the Yellow Pages days would take multiple ads out in every book. Use a local number, giving an impression of being local but employing locksmiths out of the area to travel a distance. It works both ways here. The National will promise to work with a locksmith whenever he agrees to cover the work; if he says no to them, he will go to the bottom of the preferred list. Therefore, he keeps saying yes and travelling further for his work.
Unessceary Lock changes
It is difficult to prove at times, but a dodgy locksmith will make his markup by persuading you to upgrade a lock or change a part that is fine. The other one is where keys have been lost, and you are locked out. A good locksmith will be able to “pick” the lock without the need to drill. There are times when there are no spare keys, and a new lock is needed; this can be acceptable. It can also be quicker, but the charge for a new lock can be evil.
